Living with a physical disability can be extremely overwhelming and lead to people experiencing a wide range of difficult emotions.
When you are living with a physical disability, you may experience challenges with access, independence and self-care.
The DisabilityPlus team is here to help you navigate these so that you can get on with living the life you choose and doing what you want. We have been supporting clients with physical disabilities for ten years and have a range of psychological therapies for people at each stage of life.
Our therapists work with all types of disabilities, including rare and complex physical disabilities
The impact of a disability on all different levels for all different people is complex. We understand all these issues and many more because our counsellors have a disability.
So, if you’re struggling in any way right now, please do get in touch with us.
Talking to someone outside your family or circle of friends may help you better understand your feelings and manage them more effectively.
Emotional Impact
The emotional impact of a disability can make you feel sad, frightened, confused, worried, angry, & overwhelmed. In severe cases, addictions & suicidal thoughts can surface.
However, a physical disability counselling service with specialist therapists can help you through your journey based on shared first-hand experiences.
Mental Health Impact
Most people with physical disabilities do not have mental health problems. However, some people can realise that they are becoming depressed & anxious. Nevertheless, many people who experience a disability have disturbing and distressing thoughts with feelings of loss and grief.
These symptoms often pass; however, they may lead to more serious mental & emotional health conditions in the future including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and personality disorders.
Specialist
Our counsellors are trained to listen to your problems & find out what’s causing them and help you find a solution.
As well as listening and discussing important issues with you, we can suggest strategies for resolving problems and, if necessary, help you change your attitudes and behaviour.
Counselling
There are many reasons people come to a therapist, and there is no limit to what can be discussed in Physical Disabilities Counselling.
Seeking the help of a qualified therapist and counsellor can assist you in exploring thoughts and emotions and making sense of why you are thinking and feeling a certain way.
Understanding
When a person starts counselling with us we understand the different types of Physical Disabilities.
This is an essential part of the counselling process, it ensures you and the counsellor can talk openly about certain life situations you may be experiencing without you having to explain your particular type of cerebral palsy to the counsellor.
Communication
You may need to use assistive communication devices. This is not a problem for us as our counsellors can support this form of communication.
