Most people post injury do not have mental health problems. However, some people can realise that they are becoming depressed & anxious. Nevertheless, many people have disturbing and distressing memories of their injury. These symptoms often pass; however, they may lead to more serious mental & emotional health conditions in the future.
“Physical and mental health are closely linked; however, your mental health is more vulnerable when physical health is affected by injury”
Following a personal injury, a common mental health issue is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This condition may develop following a traumatic event; It is common for people to be overwhelmed by frightening and distressing feelings after such an experience. PTSD may develop straight after the trauma has occurred; however, there are cases when PTSD symptoms are noticed long after, sometimes even a year later.
