DisabilityPlus gives every person the opportunity to be supported by a Counselor who has Tinnitus. Tinnitus Counselling helps you with your mental & emotional health well-being, whether pre-existing issues have worsened or a new condition stemming from tinnitus or balance issues. Our specialist therapists understand the problems associated with Tinnitus and the resulting behaviours you may be experiencing.
People with Tinnitus appear to have poorer quality of life compared with people who do not have tinnitus, notably in those with disabling hearing loss. Tinnitus can be a lifelong disorder and can bring about annoyance, anxiety, depression, insomnia, hyperacusis, concentration difficulties, phantom sounds and, in some extreme cases, drug misuse, suicide & self-harming thoughts.
A ringing sensation is most commonly reported; the noises people experience can vary from mild to severe; however, even mild tinnitus can cause mental health problems. Hissing, whooshing, buzzing, roaring, clicking and whistling sounds are all reported. These symptoms might occur only sporadically for you, while others experience them constantly. Tinnitus is subjective, meaning only the individual experiencing it can hear the noise.
Tinnitus is often associated with anxiety disorders, including panic attacks and phobias, depression, and, in some cases, negative personality changes. Motivation is often affected, creating additional mental health problems such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and some Mood & Personality Disorders.
During therapy, a trained Tinnitus Counsellor listens to you and helps you find solutions. It’s an opportunity to look at your problems in a different way with someone who’ll respect you and your opinions. Tinnitus counselling can make a difference; the aim is to support you with the emotional and mental health effects consequence of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is when you experience ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears. The noise you hear when you have tinnitus isn’t caused by an external sound, and other people usually can’t hear it. Tinnitus is a common problem. It affects about 15% to 20% of people, and is especially common in older adults.
Tinnitus is usually caused by an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, an ear injury or a problem with the circulatory system. For many people, tinnitus improves with treatment of the underlying cause or with other treatments that reduce or mask the noise, making tinnitus less noticeable.
When the tinnitus causes mental health issues tinnitus counselling with a suitable therapy service is always recommended.
Tinnitus is most often described as a ringing in the ears, even though no external sound is present. However, tinnitus can also cause other types of phantom noises in your ears, including:
Most people who have tinnitus have subjective tinnitus, or tinnitus that only you can hear. The noises of tinnitus may vary in pitch from a low roar to a high squeal, and you may hear it in one or both ears. In some cases, the sound can be so loud it interferes with your ability to concentrate or hear external sound. Tinnitus may be present all the time, or it may come and go.
In rare cases, tinnitus can occur as a rhythmic pulsing or whooshing sound, often in time with your heartbeat.
This is called pulsatile tinnitus. If you have pulsatile tinnitus, your doctor may be able to hear your tinnitus when he or she does an examination (objective tinnitus).
